We had a delightfully delicious field trip to Picket Fence Creamery. I was surprised when we pulled into a charming, small, family farm driveway. At only 80 acres,  Picket Fence Creamery is keeping local stores well stocked and gives the impression of a much larger operation.

With family values at their core, Picket Fence Creamery is staying true to their beliefs and turning down offers to grow larger and even reach the Chicago marketplace. The Burkhart family makes a product they are proud of and serve to their own families. Their passion and love for the dairy industry shines through as they guide guests around the farm.

The hour-long tour is mostly outdoors, so come prepared in farm gear. If you aren’t sure what you need when visiting an Iowa farm, check out my great tips on what not to wear.

Kids will love to hold the kittens and pet the calf while learning about the milking process, pasteurization and preparing of products.

Julie & Jill are great with students and happy to answer questions. While we were enjoying our tour, two baby calves escaped from their pens. Oh, what excitement! A true day on the farm! We had a slight delay while the ladies rounded up the calves. Apparently this has never happened during a tour before but we were happy for the bonus show.

It’s not everyday that you get to stand before the source of your food!

Samples Samples Samples! This was one of the yummiest field trips! Tasting fresh milk, ice cream and cheese was so appetizing. The flavor of the dairy products come from the different breeds, health and food of the cows.
